How Communication Has Changed

Today is my co-worker Christine Kretchmer’s birthday. Did I actually remember this? No. I’m ridiculously bad with remembering details like that. Want to know how I knew before she walked in the office? Facebook.

I actually did not say anything to her before she walked in to the office. I was logged in to Facebook to post a message about launching a mobile Web site for Bishop Kearney. From there I saw a message saying that it was her birthday. I clicked the message and wrote on her wall to wish her a happy birthday right then and there. She was in the office right next to me. I could have just walked in and said it, but that is how I chose to communicate. The kicker? She wrote back rather than get up either.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened to me. Last month I was over my friend Sabrina’s house and we were watching something on TV. She had her laptop next to her and was on Facebook responding to a message. I got out my Droid phone and messaged her to poke fun at her. She called me a dork, but then we started chatting! We’re literally sitting right next to each other and that was how we chose to communicate.

How do you communicate with your friends?
